Have you ever walked through a
cemetery and wondered about the people who were
buried there? Inside the boundaries of the once
thriving town of Guyandotte, lies the graves of
some of it's most prominent citizens.
Guyandotte is currently home to
three cemeteries: The Guyandotte Methodist
Church Cemetery, the oldest church cemetery in
the county, Pat's Branch Cemetery, on the
grounds of what is today Special Metals, and
finally the counties first Catholic Church
Cemetery, located on a hillside where St.
Peter's Catholic Church once stood.
Some of the oldest graves in the
area date back to the 1820's and 1830's, and due
to the ravages of time and vandals, many today
are missing grave markers.
Many of Guyandotte's past
residents today rest in nearby Highland and
Spring Hill Cemeteries, however some of the
earliest residents such as the Carroll's and
Wellington's are interred in Guyandotte.
Inside the wrought iron gates of
the Guyandotte Methodist Church Cemetery you can
find graves with connections to the
Revolutionary War, Civil War, Chief Cornstalk,
Jesse James, and even one grave that perhaps may
be empty.
