The first known published account of a
paranormal encounter in Guyandotte was published in
September of 1905 in the Huntington Advertiser.
The account states that a gentleman was
walking home from work one evening when he encountered a
mysterious figure dressed like a woman in mourning. The
man made an attempt to speak to the woman but she would
not reply. The man would continue on his journey home
but the mysterious woman followed. In the report, other
local residents reported a similar story, frightening
the public so much so they would avoid the area at
night.
Over the years the legend of the Lady in
Black has faded into time, but today her story has been
resurrected. Guyandotte's most famous ghost gets
new life through our haunted walking tours. Her story
will continue to be told and perhaps one day we may
encounter the lady herself.
